The debate began with a warning issued by the moderater, not to speak over each other or interrupt, and unlike the previous debate these challenges were met with muting of their microphones: They clashed on issues such as health care, racial issues, Covid-19 and the environment. It started with talks about coronavirus, Trump blamed china for the deaths, once again highlighting his blatant xenophobia, whereas Biden said he would have ‘shut down the virus but not the country’. He then went on to blame Trump’s ineptitude to fight the virus the reason for the huge death toll, well over 200 thousand.
They then moved on to Personal tax and donors, where Biden accused Trump of having a secret bank account in china and that Trump had payed more tax in china than America. Biden then said he had never taken money from a foreign donor and he had published his tax returns for the last 20 years. Trump responded promising to publish his tax returns, adding he had prepaid his tax and that the $750 claim made by the New York Times was false.
They moved on to racism and trump claimed he was the least racist president with the exception of Abraham Lincoln. Biden was adamant saying "he pours fuel on every single racist fire," giving examples of racism agains Mexicans and muslims as well as the proud boys ( a far right racist militia group) which trump told to "stand back and stand buy."
There where some insults hurled, Trump said he ran because Biden and Obama "did a poor job." and Biden was a "typical politician" Biden responded saying he was anxious for the election because " the character of the country was on the ballot"
Overall the debate was much more civil and we learnt a lot more about each candidate, early polls suggest Biden edged a win but this morning the President shared surveys from the daily wire that suggested he won on twitter. You gov suggested it was 54%-39% in favour of Joe Biden. But many political commentators suggested Trump won such as Liz Mair a prominent commentator. Their final arguments where starkly different Trump promised to cut tax saying Biden would raise it. Biden on the other hand said he would represent the American people no matter which way they voted.
Felix's Verdict
I think this debate will more likely influence people to vote Trump, even though Biden was straight talking and very competent, he didn't show voters anything new. I think Trump showed he could be respectful and actually debate, and I think that could sway some voters that where still unsure. But Overall I think Biden won the debate.
stay tuned for the election special episode coming soon.
